The WISE Examination System
Overview
The WISE International Secondary Examination is the standardised assessment system through which the achievement of WISE candidates is measured against the learning outcomes of the WISE Curriculum Framework. The examination system is operated by the Secretariat of WEQSC under the authority of the Examinations Committee.
The WISE Examination System comprises two components:
- Internal Assessment — Continuous assessment conducted by the accredited school, contributing forty per cent of the final grade in each subject;
- WISE Examination — A centrally-set examination conducted by WEQSC, contributing sixty per cent of the final grade in each subject.
Together, these components provide a comprehensive and reliable measure of a candidate's achievement against the learning outcomes of the WISE Curriculum Framework.
Alignment with International Frameworks
The WISE Examination System is aligned with:
- The UNESCO ISCED taxonomy (Levels 2 and 3);
- The European Qualifications Framework (EQF) (Levels L0–L7);
- The Bologna standards for the European Higher Education Area (EHEA);
- The UNESCO Global Convention on the Recognition of Qualifications;
- The Council of Europe Lisbon Recognition Convention.
This alignment ensures that WISE credentials are directly comparable with secondary qualifications in all jurisdictions within the European Higher Education Area and beyond.
Examination Levels
The WISE Examination System operates at the following qualification levels:
| Level | EQF Reference | Description |
|---|---|---|
| L0 | Foundation Level | Preparatory qualification |
| L1 | EQF 1 | Basic secondary qualification |
| L2 | EQF 2 | Lower secondary qualification |
| L3 | EQF 3 | Intermediate secondary qualification |
| L4 | EQF 4 | University entrance requirement |
| L5 | EQF 5 | Advanced secondary qualification |
| L6 | EQF 6 | Higher secondary qualification |
| L7 | EQF 7 | Pre-tertiary qualification |
Examination Sessions
Examinations are conducted in accordance with the Examination Calendar published by the Secretariat not less than ninety days before the first examination date. The calendar sets out:
- The dates of the WISE examinations;
- The deadlines for examination registration, Internal Assessment submission, and special examination arrangement applications;
- The dates for release of results and issuance of credentials.
Examination Structure
The WISE Examination System operates on the following structure:
- Continuous Internal Assessment — Conducted by the accredited school throughout the academic session, against WEQSC rubrics, and subject to moderation by WEQSC;
- Centralised WISE Examination — Set, calibrated, and moderated by WEQSC, delivered at accredited schools, and scored against WEQSC's standardised marking schemes.
The final grade in each subject is composed of:
- Internal Assessment — 40% of the total mark;
- WISE Examination — 60% of the total mark.
Candidate Registration
All candidate registrations are processed through accredited schools only. WEQSC does not process public admissions directly. A candidate must be enrolled at an accredited school in order to sit the WISE Examination.
Examination registration must be submitted by the school through the Institution Management Portal not less than thirty days before the examination date.
Security of Examination Materials
The WISE Examination System is protected by the following security measures:
- Question papers are released to the school under seal and must be opened in the examination hall in the presence of candidates and the invigilator;
- The seal-opening is recorded;
- Examination scripts are collected under secure conditions and returned to WEQSC for central marking and moderation;
- Credentials are secured with immutable cryptographic NTAG verification.
Credential Issuance
Upon successful completion of the required assessments, the candidate receives a WISE Credential, comprising:
- A printed certificate;
- A detailed marksheet;
- A digital record held in the WISE credential register;
- A verification reference enabling third-party confirmation of authenticity.
The digital record is the authoritative version of the credential, and is retained indefinitely.
Conclusion
The WISE Examination System is designed to ensure that the achievement of a student is measured against uniform standards, assessed reliably, and recognised internationally. All examination procedures not expressly set out in this portal must follow the Secretariat's official bylaws.
